Hapkido is a Korean martial art built on three core principles. Rather than meeting force with force, a Hapkidoist redirects, flows, and adapts — making it highly effective regardless of your size or strength. It is a complete self-defence system covering striking, joint locks, throws, and ground defence.
Many Hapkido techniques use flowing circular movements — found in strikes, holds, takedowns, and throws. Circular motion allows a smaller practitioner to redirect and control a larger attacker, using less force to achieve greater effect.
In Hapkido, an attack is rarely met head-on. Rather than power against power, a Hapkidoist deflects, absorbs, or joins an opponent's force — then redirects it back against them. Your attacker's strength becomes your advantage.
Water always finds the flaw in a vessel, exerting constant pressure until it prevails. In Hapkido, constant movement, varied rhythm, and adaptability overwhelm any opponent — just as flowing water wears through stone over time.
Jung Shin Hapkido is a structured system. Students progress through a clear belt pathway, building skills progressively with every grading. Each stage introduces new techniques while deepening your understanding of the principles that make Hapkido effective.
A full range of hand strikes and kicks — from basic fundamentals to advanced spinning and jumping techniques developed progressively through each belt level.
The hallmark of Hapkido. Wrist locks, arm bars, S-locks, V-locks and finger techniques applied to control and restrain an attacker with precision.
Hip throws, shoulder throws, sweeps, whip throws and more — using circular motion and non-resistance to redirect an attacker's momentum to the ground.
Practical ground-level skills including guard, defensive get-ups, balance breaks, and leg and hand attacks — preparing you for real-world situations.
Advanced techniques for defending against stabs, slashes and other armed attacks. Developed at higher belt levels for a complete self-defence education.
Flowing sequences that chain techniques together — developing fluency, timing and the ability to adapt when a technique meets resistance.

I came in knowing nothing. Within a few months I had real skills and real confidence. The instruction is clear, the group is supportive, and every class I learn something new.
The training is challenging but the people make it — everyone helps each other improve. It's not competitive in a bad way, it's genuinely collaborative. I look forward to every Wednesday.
I was looking for something practical — not just sport. This is exactly that. The techniques are grounded in real-world situations and the progression keeps you engaged long-term.
